This tour delivered on all its promises. I liked that the tour had small numbers and although this made it expensive, the intimate nature of the tour was worth it. When I heard from our tour guide, Chloe that this was her first tour, I thought to myself that we’d lucked out and were going to be ‘Guinea pigs’ to her ‘practice run’. It couldn’t have been further from the truth. She was knowledgeable but humble with her knowledge. She had a bright, intelligent personality. Part of our tour involved photography tips to maximise our photographs. This was en-pointe and dealt thoroughly with what we needed to know. When she led us onto the track we would take to the Glacier, her pace was comfortable and she stopped frequently to allow people to catch up, as she pointed out significant sights on the track. She clearly loves the forest. When we got to the glacier, it was as spectacular as I expected. She was able to guide us as to facts about its slow retreat - about 80 feet per year. Our driver then picked us up at the glacier information booth. He seemed to be late collecting us or perhaps there was some confusion as to where he was parked, but we waited quite a while for this to occur. Chloe handled this with aplomb and professionalism, despite her young age. We then boarded a well-appointed motor-catamaran and were escorted out into the channel to observe whales. Gastineau Guiding kept strictly to setbacks from the whales, which other companies did not. It made viewing the whales very much at a distance, but some of the camera lenses on board would have picked up details better. We have been spoiled by much better whale tours in Australia, where the whales came to our boat and we got excellent photos. Nevertheless, Captain Michelle manoeuvred the vessel expertly and found the whales easily. I would not have wanted the whales scared away by boat activity. Chloe explained facts about whales and their habits and this was interesting. We made it back to our cruise ship with five minutes to spare before the last passengers on board!! This took managing our trip throughout the afternoon carefully and thoroughly. This was appreciated. A ship-based excursion group would always be waited for, so we weren’t worried, it was good to be delivered back to the ship in Juneau.

Besides the weather and water conditions being perfect, the whole experience was incredible. We had the opportunity to see humpback whales on 3 different occasions. In addition, the scenic views are breath taking. Staff were extremely knowledgable and polite. Would do it again if we had the opportunity.

Great tour, bus drivers were very knowledgeable and gave good commentary. Props to whale watching tour staff Captain James, naturalist Nate, deckhand Monica for doing a great job pointing our whales, navigating the boat to point in the right direction, teaching about the whales. Truly an honest and well done tour.
