Stop At: Oak Alley Plantation, 3645 Highway 18 Great River Road, Vacherie, LA 70090-7079

Experience a bygone era in one of the South's most beautiful settings - Oak Alley Plantation, built in 1839. Marvel at the unbelievable quarter-mile long alley of 28 magnificent Oak trees, each over 250 years old.

Perhaps the most photographed plantation ever, Oak Alley has been the setting for such motion pictures as "Interview with a Vampire", "Primary Colors" and the wedding of Bo and Hope from the daytime soap opera, "Days of our Lives".

Your guided Oak Valley Plantation tour will reveal the stories of the home and its history. View the Majestic Cypress Trees in Louisiana's swamps bordering the Mississippi River. You can purchase a snack, salad or sandwich in the Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor to enjoy at the picnic tables or aboard the coach (not included in price).

Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

Pass By: Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, LA

Although called a lake, this is actually a large lagoon and brackish estuary fed by fresh water rivers and connected to the Gulf of Mexico. Covering 630 square miles (1600 km2) it is one of the largest wetlands in North America.

Pass By: I-10 Bonnet Carré Spillway Bridge, St Rose, LA 70087, USA

View the spillway, a flood control operation in the Lower Mississippi west of New Orleans. The spillway, when open, allows floodwaters from the Mississippi River to flow into Lake Pontchartrain and thence into the Gulf of Mexico.

Pass By: St. Joseph Plantation, 3535 Highway 18, Vacherie, LA 70090-7073

Historic plantation, circa 1830, that remains a family owned working sugar plantation today along with sister property Felicity Plantation, circa 1846.

Pass By: Laura Plantation: Louisiana's Creole Heritage Site, 2247 Highway 18, Vacherie, LA 70090-5409

We thoroughly enjoyed our 5.5 hour excursion outside of NOLA to visit the elegant plantation home, Oak Alley.

The information in the description was not accurate. It said we would have 2.5 hours at the plantation. We only had 2 hours and we were very rushed. I was also under the impression that we would have a tour guide on the bus or that the bus driver would be giving us commentary. We had no idea where the other plantations were. Also the seal on multiple of the windows were broken and you could not see outside.

Booked the trip via Viatour because we wanted to have some firm bookings before leaving home. We were worried about communications whilst travelling so thought it best to have firm plans in place. The meeting point was around a 20 minute walk from our hotel, it wasn't immediately clear what we were looking for, 'Gray Line Lighthouse Ticket Office' however via elimination we found the building (it wasn't a lighthouse!) Pick up was prompt and we had a running commentary en route, dropping some passengers at another plantation before driving on to Oak Alley. The house is well worth a visit and the guide was very informative, but we felt slightly let down by the information about slaves who would have worked and lived there. There are a few cabins that would have been used by the slaves with some notices inside & outside the cabins with information on. I really didn't feel this did justice to the history of slaves working on the plantations. There was a short video presentation on sugar production 'white gold' and all the hazards and the people who would have worked in the production of sugar (rather than planting/cutting cane).

Beautiful home and grounds. There is also a bar, gift shop and restaurant on the premises. I really enjoyed my day there. I will say the house is not entirely authentic. It was a private resident as late as the 70’s so it has been updated some. The grounds are gorgeous.

The bus trip to and from the plantation was 1 hour 15 minutes each way. The bus had no air conditioning and no open windows for passengers. It was stifling in the heat. Most unacceptable for so many elderly patrons on the trip. The plantation itself was worth seeing but there has to be a safer way to get there. Gray Line should have never used that bus to transport people.

The outside grounds were so beautiful. The tour of the house was good especially being on the balcony. The bus transportation was comfortable and our driver gave us alot of history.

Seeing the majestic 250 year old oak trees as we arrived at Oak Alley Plantation was spectacular. The tour provided a terrific insight into Louisiana life during the early 1800’s til today.

The tour was expensive considering it was just the ride to and from the plantation. The tickets to the plantation without the bus ride are very reasonable.
