Stop At: Teatro Massimo, Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, 90138, Palermo, Sicily Italy

The colorful old open-air market is the perfect place to understand better the relationship between the Mafia and shopkeepers while walking through one of the most interesting and loud areas of the city.
Stop At: Palazzo di Giustizia, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, 90138, Palermo, Sicily Italy
Piazza della Memoria, by the Palerm Court House, is a Memorial dedicated to judges and prosecutors killed by the Mafia.

In front of the spectacular Arab-Norman Cathedral, the guide will talk about the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Mafia
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Cappadonia Gelati, Via Vittorio Emanuele, 401, 90134 Palermo PA, Italy
Along the Cassaro, you will come across with an orange sticker on their windows. Their owners - like this famous gelato place - have said NO to paying the extortion racket, or ‘pizzo’, and have joined the mafia-free critical consumption campaign promoted by the grassroots movement Addiopizzo.
You too have the chance to stop and support them with some “good” shopping!

Informative and at a sophisticated level. Provided a multi-dimensional portrayal of how and why the mafia so thoroughly dominated Sicily and how collective action by ordinary citizens forced church and state to take actions.

A really worthwhile tour, and a unique one because it addresses the difficult recent past of Sicily not the antiquarian distant past or simply enjoyable food and sights, the pleasant tourist stuff. The tour is conceptual and political as much as it is sightseeing. The guide was terrific (she spoke excellent English as well as German and welcomed questions enthusiastically and with real pleasure in addressing we foreigners' different perspectives). She took us to sites (French Historians would call them "lieux de memoire") which were places that represented important institutions (Palermo Cathedral, Palace of Justice, the Sepulcre of Sicilian heroes in the Chiesa di San Domenico (I think), the Wall of the Just, Stores that openly display the No mafia organization's sign saying we don't pay "pizzo", a house where a Mafia assassin once hid out and that was painted over by anti-Mafia activists while he was in it, etc) which was very moving but the very best part of the tour was simply hearing an I'm guessing late 20s-30ish year-old Palermitan recount her own history as an anti-Mafia activist in the organization that created this tour and has its own museum, weaving what we saw into the story and emotions aroused in her of fighting the Mafia. You will see Palermo differently but more fondly after this tour. It demonstrates that the people of Palermo fought the Mafia collectively and have had much success in reducing its power and influence over the last 30 years. I also listened to the tour with a different guide while I was waiting for ours to begin, it was for Italian tourists. He was just as impassioned and eloquent on what fighting the Mafia meant to him and his group.

Linda was a wonderful tour guide. She managed our group of 19 people professionally and with good humour. She selected quieter spots to tell us eye opening stories as we walked around the centre of Palermo. A well recommended tour.

This was a very informative tour. We had no idea about the complicated relationship between the mafia and the people of Palermo. We were glad we decided to take this tour. Some improvements could be made however. There were 15 participants on our tour and we could barely hear our guide even though she had a microphone due to all the street noise. There were many questions asked with long explanations given by our guide– informative yes but also very tiring to stand in one place and have to piece together what is being said. Headsets would vastly improve this tour. Overall a good tour, but certainly room for improvement. Note this is not an official tour guide, so nothing is mentioned about the historical buildings along the way.

I took this wonderfully informative and fascinating tour near the end of my extended stay in Palermo, but I wish I'd taken it as soon as I arrived. After consulting Addiopizzo's "critical consumption" list, I was sad to see how many of the businesses and restaurants beloved by locals have not yet joined Addiopizzo's movement or stood up to the mafia by refusing to pay the pizzo. After taking this tour, I'll be visiting only businesses and restaurants that won't give any of my money to the mafia!
This is a long tour packed with interesting information; be prepared to walk and stand a lot. There aren't a lot of places to sit down. If that doesn't sound appealing to you, please make a donation to support Addiopizzo's efforts anyway, and consult their list so that you can be a responsible consumer and diner during your time in Palermo. In addition to encouraging business owners not to fund the mafia, they provide legal and psychological support to victims of extortion and usury-- a cause well worth supporting! Ensure that your tourist dollars are well spent!

Our tour guide, Linda, was very passionate and knowledgable. We learned so much about Sicily and its struggles with organized crime which would have been missed if we stuck to more basic tours of monuments. We also learned how to spot businesses that do not pay money to organized crime which guided our choices for meals and shopping for the rest of our trip.
We did not go inside any churches or theaters, so keep in mind that you may need to visit these sites on your own time if you’re interested in exploring the inside.
Overall, I highly recommend
