Stop At: Penas Blancas, Penas Blancas, Province of San Jose

Get to know the tropical river ecosystem, experience the tranquility of the forest while floating slowly down the Peñas Blancas River with the opportunity to observe many species of arboreal and aquatic animals such as: monkeys, sloths, iguanas, turtles, alligators and different types of birds such as herons, cormorants, American darters, and passerines, along with the possibility of observing a reptile species called the basilisk lizard, which is capable of walking on water. The interesting vegetation includes dense branches of ficus, luehea, and kapok trees full of lianas and epiphytic plants, which intersect from both sides of the river forming tunnels full of various shapes and exuberant green colors where very little sunlight gets through.
This tour is perfect for those who do not want much walking, but plenty of opportunities to observe and photograph the natural beauty and wildlife.

The guides were knowledgeable and friendly. We had a lovely group of people as well. There is a fair amount of unshaded areas of the river and the sun was intense. We were on the 11am tour and saw howler monkeys, a sloth, a boa constrictor, bats and lots of iguanas and basilisks.

The shuttle was timely, the staff and naturalist guides were friendly, spoke well in English and of course Spanish, were incredibly knowledgeable and taught us a lot and the river and the beauty of Costa Rica was completely unforgettable. We recommend this for anyone! We saw sloths, howler monkeys, toucan and kingfishers and herons and the best of all was a troupe of capuchin monkeys that had little ones who played like toddlers with no concern at all we were watching them! Phenomenal tour! And, the authentic snack at the end was a perfect ending to the trip. 5 stars all the way!

Fantastic trip. Very mellow and safe for multiple ages and abilities, though you will need to be able to step into and out of the raft and make your way down and up some outdoor steps. The guides Andreas and Diego were stellar - very knowledgeable and thoughtful. We saw Jesus Christ lizards, snakes, howler monkeys, countless birds and more. This day was a major highlight of our trip.

My husband and I did this recently for our 25th wedding anniversary. Christian was incredible! He guided us down the river and made sure we had a wonderful time. A couple of great places to stop and swim. Even helped us get it authentic exfoliation using the soil of the river bank. It was a great way to experience Costa Rica.

Great experience - we are a group of 4 couples so occupied two boats. We saw several groups of howler monkeys, a family of white face monkeys, toucans, a spectacle owl (which is apparently rare during the day). Guides were very knowledgeable and took great care of us. Coffee, juice and snacks after float were good

The boat ride was almost 2 hour long but the time flew by. We saw so many different species of Toucans, birds, owls, iguanas and monkeys. Guide was also very nice and informative. The restaurant after tour serves fresh food which is an added plus.

We did this after 2 days and nights of solid rain - the river was high, brown and swollen. I wasn't convinced we would be able to do it but we did. Apart from 1 or 2 passengers losing their dignity getting into the raft, it all went well and felt perfectly safe despite the conditions. It continued to rain throughout and that impacted the amount of wildlife we saw. But we still managed good views of howler monkeys, toucans and long nosed bats. Coffee, food and a shot of moonshine were welcome at the end. This was followed by a presentation (and tasting) on cacao and chocolate which we hadn't expected. All in all a great trip despite the weather.

Diego and all the guides on our float tour were so friendly and great at spotting wildlife. Diego #2 was the guide for our boat - very good. We saw several troops of monkeys, sloths, bats, iguanas, a turtle, and several varieties of birds including toucans (although I admit I had a hard time seeing the toucans). I think it’s vitally important to have a guide on any wildlife tour in Costa Rica. Otherwise, it’s almost impossible to find the animals. I highly recommend this relaxing tour
