No trip to Maui is complete without a trip to Paia, Maui’s coolest little town. Located on the North Shore, Paia started as a plantation town with the opening of Paia Store in 1896 to serve the needs of the multi-cultural plantation workers of Paia Sugar Mill.

Stop At: Pua'a Ka'a State Park, Hana Highway, Maui, HI
Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside is a charming and lush stop along the Road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. This wayside, situated in a rainforest setting, offers a serene escape into nature. Visitors are welcomed by dense vegetation, including towering bamboo groves, vibrant tropical flowers, and thick ferns.
One of the main attractions at Pua'a Ka'a is the picturesque waterfall and natural pool. The cascading water creates a tranquil ambiance, inviting visitors to cool off in the refreshing pool or simply enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. The area is often dotted with colorful birds and the soothing sounds of nature.

Stop At: Wai'anapanapa State Park, Hana Hwy. near mile marker 32, Hana, Maui, HI
This stunning beach, located on the eastern coast of Maui, is a result of the gradual erosion of volcanic materials, which has created sand that is black in color. As you explore the beach, you'll be mesmerized by the contrast between the dark sand and the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. The high mineral content of the black sand also gives it a subtle sparkle, making it a breathtaking sight.

Stop At: Ke‘anae Point, Maui, HI
As a visitor to the area, you'll be awestruck by the majestic Ke'anae Peninsula. This impressive finger of newer lava stretches out from the Hana Highway's cliff line for half a mile. Even before reaching the turnout, you'll catch glimpses of this scenic wonder from various lookouts along the way. Ke'anae is a historically significant village that has been cultivating taro for centuries, and today, much of the land is still used for taro lo'i farming. It's remarkable to think that the soil was brought down here basket by basket, but it's true since the area is made up of young lava rock that was created quite recently (in geological terms) during a massive flow from Haleakala.

Stop At: Ke'anae Arboretum, Hana Hwy., mile marker 17, Ke'anae, Maui, HI 96708
Located adjacent to the Pi'ina'au Stream, the Ke'anae Arboretum features terraces built by ancient Hawaiians for cultivating taro, which was a staple of their diet. A paved walkway measuring 0.6 miles runs through the arboretum, showcasing a diverse array of timber, fruit, and ornamental trees from different tropical regions of the world, many of which are labeled with nameplates. With over 150 types of tropical plants, including taro, the arboretum is an excellent spot to observe native flowers and marvel at the vibrant bark of rainbow eucalyptus trees.

For travelers seeking a thrilling and unique experience in Maui, the Venus Pools should definitely be on your list. This spot is known locally as one of the best places for cliff diving into the water, making it a must-visit destination. The drive to get there is absolutely worth it, and once you arrive, you can either jump off the cliffs yourself or watch the locals do their flips. What makes the Venus Pools even more special is that it's where the island's fresh water meets the ocean, giving you the rare chance to be in both fresh and salt water at the same time. So pack your swimsuit, bring your sense of adventure, and prepare to make unforgettable memories at the Venus Pools!

Stop At: Ho'okipa Beach Park, Hana Highway, Paia, Maui, HI 96779
As part of our tour, we will make a stop at Ho'okipa beach, one of Maui's most picturesque beaches. It's the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring the Road to Hana. Aside from swimming and snorkeling, you'll have the chance to spot Hawaiian Green sea turtles, known as honu, that frequent the area. Be sure to keep a respectful distance, as they are protected by federal and state law. The best time to view these amazing creatures is in the evening, when many honu stroll onto the shore to rest and take in the stunning Hawaiian sunset.

We had six people ranging in age from 70 to 19. Everyone got to experience the Road to Hana from a wonderful guide who shared the history, culture, natural wonders and hopes for the future of Maui. We had our tour personalized to fit our group and it was truly once-in-a-lifetime. Highly recommend!

My kids (early 20’s) and I had the best experience on the road to Hana with Chris. While Chris is not from Hawaii, you would never know that he was not immersed in this culture his entire life. From the beginning of our ‘tour’ to the last minute, Chris brought Hawaii and its history and culture to life. Each stop was thoughtful and planned with our interests in mind. We were especially impressed by Chris’ enthusiasm to share his love of this island and its people. The beaches and waterfalls he took us to - all off the beaten path- were breathtaking. We especially enjoyed the other stops for lunch, banana bread, and chocolate - all made from locals Chris enthusiastically supports. As a mom who always takes the lead in planning vacations and experiences for my family, it was great for someone else, like Chris, to take the lead and offer us an especially unique day. Of all the tours we’ve taken over the years, this one was truly the best.

We had a great day with Chris on our Road to Hana ride. Chris was very friendly and knowledgeable of the island and the environment. We had a great time swimming in the waterfalls and great beaches at the ocean. Chris also brought us to a great lunch spot we thoroughly enjoyed. If you take this ride, ask for Chris!!

Our Road to Hana ride was outstanding. Our tour guide was the best tour guide we have had in a long time. Chris was friendly and very knowledgible of the island and the environment. We had a great time at the waterfalls and beaches, swimming in both. We also stopped at the some great places for lunch. Chris made the day very enjoyable and relaxing for us.

Shayne was terrific - we are a family of four (kids are 19 and 21 so not kids). It was such a good call not to drive it ourselves. Everyone got to see, Shayne was a terrific driver and guide and the SUV was spacious, clean and well-maintained. The stops were well-timed and thought out and we got so much more out of it with Shayne’s knowledge and stories. Definitely recommend!

This tour was amazing! Shayne was super friendly and was able to really make it a personalized experience. We ate great food, jumped off a waterfall, saw a lava tube along with exploring some beautiful beaches. Definitely recommend!

This review is a little late in uploading. We have been to Maui at least 10 times and did not see all that VIP Road to Hana Tour provided us with. I can't say enough about the experiences in a full custom tailored day. Our driver was Gene and he was fantastic. We made fast friends amongst our group of 7 and he went over the top to help achieve our every wish in experiencing Maui. I would highly recommend this tour to ANYONE and if you think you've seen Maui, think again and take this tour. You will be happy you did.

So, here’s the deal. It’s a road. A very windy road. With stuff to see.
And if that’s all you expect a Road to Hana tour to be, you can book with anyone.
What you would miss: Hawaii history; local insight; engaging conversation; one handed driving with animated story telling; Hana vegetation as snacks; peridot crystals; chocolate & Chanel; food truck favorites; and a spur of the moment pull-over to explore a friggin’ lava tube and/or a bamboo forest that opens to cliff jumping into a pool at the end of a waterfall.
Our day with Koby was just the right amount of SUV and stops. He keeps it flexible and goes where the mood, traffic, weather; and time of day dictate.
Note that if you’re staying on the southern part of Maui, the pickup may not happen at your resort. It is kind of backtracking for him to get you then head back to Paia/Hana Hwy again.
