Being the third largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia, Alice Springs is home to approximately 28,500 people. The locals refer to the town as The Alice or simply just Alice. The town is located a little under 300 kilometres from the southern border of the Northern Territory and South Australia.

The town sits on the Todd River, which is dry most of the time, to the north of the MacDonnell Ranges. Alice Springs was named after Lady Alice Todd, the wife of Sir Charles Todd by an English surveyor.

Alice Springs is called Mparntwe by the Aborigines of the Arrernte tribe who have inhabited The Alice for thousands of years. The city is an excellent location to discover the rich Aboriginal culture, and even pick up a genuine indigenous art piece.

The town is often used as a start point to take in some of the Northern Territorie's iconic landmarks such as Ayers Rock and the Kata Tjuta National Park. For true nature lovers and experienced trekkers the Larapinta Trail awaits, and is an excellent opportunity to experience Aboriginal traditions and take in the unforgettable landscapes.

If you are on a driving holiday, you can take part in one of the Australian classic Outback drives from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon via the Red Centre Way. This truly remarkable drive allows you to take in the vast arid red landscape of this ancient land.

Also when in Alice, donít miss out on seeing the camel races, or even saddle up on your own camel for a trail ride. Other fun activities include quad bike trail riding, or jump aboard a 4WD tour to get into the true Outback. If you happen to find yourself in Alice Springs in August, donít miss out on the Henley on Todd Regatta, which is a dry river bed boat race and very much tongue in cheek.
